The Letcher County sheriff is being charged with first degree murder after the shooting death of the 47th Judicial District judge. 43-year old Mickey Stines has been charged in the death of 54-year old Kevin Mullins.

A judge was shot and killed in the Letcher County Courthouse on Thursday, according to Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. Beshear stated in a social media post that he had been informed that a district judge in Letcher County had been shot and killed in his chambers Thursday afternoon.

Reports of an active shooter led to someone being taken into custody in Letcher County in southeastern Kentucky. The shooter supposedly happened at the courthouse in Whitesburg.

Judge Kevin Mullins, 54, was fatally shot in a courthouse at Whitesburg, Kentucky, on Thursday afternoon, according to Kentucky State Police.

Kentucky State Police Trooper Matt Gayheart provided an update Thursday night after state police said Letcher County Sheriff Shawn Stines fatally shot Judge Kevin Mullins.

District Judge Kevin Mullins was shot inside the Letcher County Courthouse. Kentucky State Auditor of Public Accounts Allison Ball confirmed Mullins was the shooting victim in a post on social media.
